Dr. Sergio Spinato “Surgical, Prosthetic and Host-Related Factors in the Limitation of Peri-implant Marginal Bone Loss”

Dr. Sergio Spinato

Associate professor of the Bologna university

Abstract:

Early Marginal Bone Loss (MBL) results in unwanted exposure of the moderately rough implant surface to the microbiome of the oral cavity. Surface roughness determines biofilm formation by facilitating biofilm adhesion, maturation and colonization. Implants with a significant MBL during the first year of function showed a higher probability of future peri-implantitis. Therefore, preventing and minimizing MBL during implant therapy may significantly reduce the risk of peri-implantitis development.

MBL may be influenced by both surgical factors (overheating during site preparation, excessive cortical compression, insufficient crestal bone width) and prosthetic variables (type of implant/abutment connection, entity and location of implant/ abutment micro-gap, multiple abutment disconnections, cement remnants). Numerous studies suggest that early marginal bone resorption is influenced more by prosthetic phases than by surgical phases. The apico-coronal positioning of implants and the use of long prosthetic abutments seems to be effective in preventing MBL. Additionally, recent findings relating to both peri-implant mucosal thickness and the effects of implant surfaces (machined and traditional rough surfaces) in the limitation of MBL will be discussed.

Dr. Meizi Eliezer “Cross linked Hyaluronic Acid- the evidence base for its benefits in different dental/surgical procedures”

Dr. Meizi Eliezer

Specialization in Periodontology and Implant dentistry Bern university, Switzerland

Abstract:

Hyaluronic acid is know since 1934. it has been shown to be involved with most of the regenerative mechanisms in both soft and hard tissues. In vitro and animal studies have demonstrated that HA significantly increases the tensile strength of granulation tissue, stimulates clot formation, induces angiogenesis, and increases and does not interfere with the calcification nodules during bone formation.

Furthermore, HA facilitates cell migration and differentiation during tissue formation and repair of both soft and hard tissues. Recently, it has been shown to improve periodontal ligament cell viability, and even early osteogenic differentiation in vitro.

All these aforementioned properties are essential for tissue regeneration and wound healing. This presentation will explain how hyaluronic acid can facilitate and improve daily procedures in dentistry like the Hygenic stage, soft and hard tissue regeneration.

11:30 – 13:00

Dr. Olivier Carcuac “The influence of implant surface characteristics on progression and treatment of peri-implantitis”
Dr. Olivier Carcuac

Dr. Olivier Carcuac

Researcher at the Department of Periodontology, The Sahlgrenska Academy at University of Gothenburg, Sweden

Abstract:

Peri-implantitis is a disease affecting the peri-implant tissues, characterized by bleeding/suppuration on probing, as well as marginal peri-implant bone loss.

During the presentation, the results of recent studies on periimplantitis and periodontitis will be reported and the important differences between the two conditions will be described. The presentation will discuss the role of implant surface characteristics on progression of periimplantitis.

The results of pre-clinical in vivo studies will be presented and

their clinical relevance will be discussed. Finally, the influence of

implant surface characteristics on the treatment of peri-implantitis

will be analyzed.

14:00 – 14:30

Dr Matteo Antonini “The concept of total implant care in the prevention of peri-implantitis”

Dr. Matteo Antonini

Inventor of Silverplug, speaker at numerous congresses and courses all over the world, Specialist in Orthodontics University of Milan

Abstract:

Dental implants is the best treatment of partial and complete edentulism since 30 years. Significant improvements have been made in in these years in the surgical techniques, dental implants design and prosthetic components. This fact makes implantology a common therapeutic procesure nowadays choose by many dentists. However, the fact that the implant is an extrernal body introduced into a human organism that is constantly changing is often underestimated.

Total implant care is a diagnostic, surgical and maintenance approach that aims to understand the physiological modifications of the site that receives the implant in a macroscopic and microscopic level and to prevent pathological changes that could compromise the long term success of the implant prosthetic rehabilitation.

14:30 – 16:00

Dr Pedro Peña “The role of galvanic electrolythic therapy in peri-implantitis surgical treatment”

Dr. Pedro Peña

Oral surgeon & Senior Medical Advisor

Abstract:

Peri-implantitis is a multifactorial biofilm induced inflammatory reaction to the insertion of titanium implants in the patients mouth. Strategies to treat such a situation may include several different procedures which ultimate goal is to complete biofilm removal, re-gain of an original implant surface characteristics, obtain a kind of flat bone architecture and ultimately attempt to obtain new bone around the treated implant surface.

During the presentation the results obtained by the incorporation of a novel implant surface cleaning procedure (GALVOSURGE) to the periimplantitis treatment traditional protocols will be showed trying to answer the question: Will this new method replace all the others in peri-implantitis treatment?

16:00 – 16:30

Jan-Willem Vaartjes “Plasma gas activation of implants and abutments”
Jan-Willem Vaartjes

Jan-Willem Vaartjes

Specilization in Implant Dentistry. Former Vice President of the Royal Dental Association of the Netherlands.

Abstract:

Recently more and more affordable and quick plasma devices came available on the market.

Hydrofylic and activated surfaces have shown to osseointegrate faster and better. Recently results on abutments have superior tissue integration.

In this lecture Jan-Willem Vaartjes will elaborates on:

  • Introduction plasma / UV in the dental industry – devices, applications and operating principle
  • Scientific evidence of Plasma / UV activation of titanium and possible benefits
  • Practical use of Plasma gas in a dental office
